The skin is the biggest organ of the body.  It does not only cover and protect our body, it also helps our body get rid of toxins by sweating.  Unfortunately, it is also the one part of the body that we apply the most chemicals on.  The products and cosmetics that we use daily ~ from lotions, to suncreens, to body scrubs, to perfumes and powder ~ all contain chemicals that are potentially harmful to the body.

The danger that these chemicals do to our bodies is explained simply by one website article:

xxx The collection of personal-care products in our bathroom cabinets—women use an average of 12 a day, men six—contains an assortment of chemicals, including some that have been shown to disrupt hormones or increase cancer risk. Because each of these products contains about 12 chemicals, we are literally bathing, lathering, brushing, spraying, powdering and rubbing ourselves and our children with dozens of chemicals every day. Nearly all of these chemicals can penetrate the skin, and some we ingest directly from our lips or hands.

While many of the chemicals used in common personal-care products are benign, some are known carcinogens, neurotoxins or reproductive toxins. Others are endocrine disrupters that upset the body’s hormonal balance (leading to weight gain and other hormone-related health problems), including chemicals that mimic estrogen in the body and can cause problems in sexual development and adult sexual function, as well as increase the risk of breast and prostate cancer. One of the more popular chemicals found in the personal care products that we use everyday is parabens.  According to one website article:

xxx Parabens are widely used preservatives that prevent the growth of bacteria, mold and yeast in cosmetic products. Sounds good, right? Not so fast, they do more than that. Parabens possess estrogen-mimicking properties that are associated with increased risk of breast cancer. These chemicals are absorbed through the skin and have been identified in biopsy samples from breast tumors. They can be found in makeup, body washes, deodorants, shampoos and facial cleansers. xxx (taken from this website)

And yes, parabens is also found in lotions, too.

Another dangerous chemical is phthalates.  According to the same website article quoted above:

Phthalates. A group of chemicals used in hundreds of products to increase the flexibility and softness of plastics. The main phthalates in cosmetics and personal care products are dibutyl phthalate in nail polish, diethyl phthalate in perfumes and lotions, and dimethyl phthalate in hair spray. They are known to be endocrine disruptors and have been linked to increased risk of breast cancer, early breast development in girls, and reproductive birth defects in males and females. Unfortunately, it is not disclosed on every product as it’s added to fragrances (remember the “secret formula” not listed), a major loophole in the law. They can be found in deodorants, perfumes/colognes, hair sprays and moisturizers. (taken from this website)

Other dangerous chemicals include Triclosan, Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), Formaldehyde, Toluene, and Propylene glycol.  You can read about these chemicals from this website where they are succintly explained, and from other sites in the net.

Even fragrances and synthetic colors, which abound in many of our personal care products including lotions and moisturizers, are not safe to either. Synthetic colors are carcinogens.  The same website article quoted above says:

If you take a look at your product label and notice FD&C or D&C, they represent artificial colors. F — representing food and D&C representing drug and cosmetics. These letters precede a color and number (e.g., D&C Red 27 or FD&C blue 1). These synthetic colors are derived from petroleum or coal tar sources. Synthetic colors are suspected to be a human carcinogen, a skin irritant and are linked to ADHD in children. The European Classification and Labeling considers it a human carcinogen and the European Union has banned it. (taken from this website)

    And fragrances?

This term was created to protect a company’s “secret formula.” But as the consumer you could be putting on a concoction that contains tons of chemicals that are hazardous to your health. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG) Skin Deep Database, fragrance mixes have been associated with allergies, dermatitis, respiratory distress and potential effects on the reproductive system. It can be found in many products such as perfume, cologne, conditioner, shampoo, body wash and moisturizers. (taken from this website)

So why use ONO Body Butter?

While it may not be possible for many of us to completely stop using chemical-based products immediately, it will help if we can at least use one chemical-based product less and replace it with an all-natural one.  ONO Moisturizing Body Butter is a good replacement for our usual lotion and moisturizer.  It is good for the skin and the hair, and works well for the feet as well.  It can lighten dark spots and stretch marks, soften callouses, and treat minor cuts and wounds.  It is also a good substitute for lip balm.

    Potential Sensitivity to Beeswax

This product has beeswax. Beeswax itself does not cause any allergies or sensitivities. But propolis does to some people. Propolis is “bee glue” that gets mixed in the wax. Propolis can cause a rash. Not many people have this sensitivity to propolis, but if you are not sure, you may want to keenly observe your reaction to the product. Stop use if a rash develops.

    The All-Natural Guarantee

Like our other ONO products, this does not contain artificial fragrances, artificial colours, hardeners, or any other artificial additives. It is completely all-natural and is entirely handmade.
